applicants must meet eligibility criteria
No Interest Loans are offered to
individuals and families on low incomes,
typically those with a Centrelink or
Healthcare card. Eligibility criteria
require the applicant to live in the
areas of Whitehorse, Monash,
Manningham or Boroondara and have
resided at their current address for
a period of six months. With all
applications, a thorough income and
expenditure assessment is completed
with one of the Centre’s assessors.
Many goods can be obtained through
Good Shepherd Buying Service, who will
obtain the the best available price.
Goods can only be purchased through
a trader with a registered ABN.
loan criteriaApplicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be the primary lease holder or able to provide confirmation of residency arrangements.
- Have lived in their current accommodation for a period of 6 months.
- Be on a low income or Centrelink benefit.
- Be able to complete an income and expenditure assessment which demonstrates capacity to make loan repayments.
- Be able to make a commitment to the repayment of the loan.
- Be able to repay the loan within a period of 12 months.
Loans of up to $1200 are repaid over a
twelve month period. Loans are not for
debt repayment, but for the purchase of
items such as new household goods,
computers, motor vehicle repairs
and educational expenses.
If more than one item, they must be
purchased from the same store.
The scheme enables people to obtain
items which they could not otherwise
afford and without the impost of
additional credit charges.
Cheques are made out to the trader,
not to an individual.
Repayments are generally made via Centrepay - a free direct bill-paying service offered to people receiving income from Centrelink. Payments are deducted from Centrelink income payments in manageable amounts, assisting with budget planning. The amount is dependent on the size of the loan. For people not on Centrelink, a direct debit repayment system can be arranged.
Initial enquiries are made to the Centre at Reception. A brochure will then be forwarded, outlining the documentation required for the assessment interview. Loans are approved by a committee and generally take up to a minimum of two weeks from the interview date.
The Centre is open weekdays 9.30am - 3.45pm.
